Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race

The annual Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race is free to watch and open to all ages. Watch teams race Kinetic sculptures through streets, water, mud, and sand. The sculptures are human-powered all-terrain artwork, made from new and repurposed materials. Come for the race and stay for a day filled with activities.

The Race

Teams will line up on one side of Market Street for spectators, officials, and fans to get a close look at the engineering prowess of the sculptures about to race. The start will be Lemans-style, with pilots positioned across the street from their sculptures. At the starting sound they’ll run to their sculptures, get in and start pedaling. The race winds through the city to the mud pit’s secret location and then to the Lowell Heritage State Park and Beach. The sculptures plunge into the waters of the Merrimack River for their final obstacle. Once out of the water, they will race back to the finish line on Market Street.

Spectators

Spectators are invited to bring their bikes to ride along and follow the race. The spectator procession will follow the judges and nurse brigade. Costumes are encouraged, and racing teams will bribe costumed spectators for People’s Choice Award votes.

Activities

Along with the race, enjoy a full day of activities with lawn games and live music performances throughout the day. Stop by the family fun zone for face painting, bubbles, street performers, and dancing. Find food trucks at Heritage State Park and stay for the after-party and award ceremony.
