DESCRIPTION: Merrimack Repertory Theatre has been Merrimack Valley’s professional theatre company since 1979, and is an integral part of Lowell’s identity as the cultural heart of the region. MRT produces vibrant, contemporary plays that explore what it means to be alive today, with a seven-show season that runs from September through May. Its intimate 279-seat theatre is easy to get to, with free parking. MRT is a cultural resource for its community and strives to remove barriers to access and build community partnerships.
The company is known as a leader in fostering and celebrating new plays, frequently producing world and regional premieres, as well as working with its national network of associate artists on workshops and readings. Acknowledging that artists are at the core of all creative work, MRT focuses on developing relationships with leading theatre artists from around the region and the country. These artists are attracted to Lowell by MRT’s reputation for its unwavering commitments to the highest artistic standards and the production of new work.

The greatest Christmas story of all time returns to MRT for the first time in 21 years: Joel Colander (It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, Going to See the Kid) uses his dexterous voice and inventive acting to bring Ebenezer Scrooge and the rest of your favorite characters to life. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ own live storytelling performances- and with your favorite carols played by live onstage musicians- we’ll remind you of the true meaning of Christmas: the singular joy of fellowship and compassion.
