Exhibit: February 3 – April 28

Reception: Sunday, February 19, 4–6 PM

Lowell, MA:  FROM TELLING TO KNOWING, an exhibit of paintings by artist Nan Hockenbury will be on display at the Mandarin Asian Bistro in downtown Lowell, from February 3 through April 28, 2017.  The exhibit is curated by Middlesex Community College adjunct professor, Mary Hart.

What better antidote to the grey wintry weather than the exuberant paintings of Lowell artist Nan Hockenbury?  The paintings, installed at Mandarin Asian Bistro, burst with color and movement and echo themes of rebirth and restoration… much needed as the winter season drags on.

Nan maintains a studio space at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell, and is active at the Centre Club of the North Shore. She studied painting, art history and feminism at Goddard College and Tufts University and cites the rich history of creation myths and stories as influences in her work.

Nan says “I describe origin stories featuring powerful creator goddesses, which incorporate themes of invention, nature, and life. My paintings are expressive not figurative histories. Like those of the original story tellers, they recount actions that were imagined not seen.”  The paintings are taken from several different 6-panel story series, but they are created with the idea that they can stand alone as artworks.

A public reception and opportunity to meet the artist will be held Sunday, Feb.19 from 4 to 6 PM, with light refreshments provided. An artist lunch to celebrate Women’s History Month is planned for March 20 at 11:30 AM. Nan will give a short talk about the work and will join participants for lunch and conversation. Both events will take place at the Mandarin Asian Bistro. To reserve a seat contact Mary

Mandarin Asian Bistro features pan Asian cuisine, including sushi, and is open seven days a week, from 11:30 am to 10 PM, midnight on the weekend. It is located at 24 Market St in downtown Lowell.

Mary Hart is a Lowell resident, an artist member of the Arts League of Lowell (ALL), the founder of Downtown Lowell First Thursdays, and an adjunct professor in the art department at Middlesex Community College.
