LOADING DOCK ARTS, INC. ANNOUNCES “WOMEN & TEXILES EXPO”
Local non-profit presents free, day-long event celebrating art, culture and sustainability
Lowell, Massachusetts – Loading Dock Arts, Inc. and Loading Dock Arts Education are pleased to announce the Women & Textiles Expo, taking place Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10:00AM to 4:30PM. This dynamic, daylong exposition will take place in the Onyx Room at Western Avenue Studios, located at 122 Western Avenue in Lowell.
Timed to coincide with Lowell Women’s Week 2017, the Women & Textiles Expo focuses on the diverse ways in which local women engineer and use materials to design artful clothing and sustainable fabric. A colorful array of demonstrations and presentations highlight the historical, cultural and environmental roles of women makers, designers, and entrepreneurs throughout the textile exposition.
“What is more fun than seeing and doing?” said Sara White, Program Chair of Loading Dock Arts Education and Board Member of Loading Dock Arts, Inc. “This event promises to be a wonderful opportunity for greater Lowell to see our local designers and fabric artists, and to make something as essential as cloth. Meet the artists, entrepreneurs, and organizations who are connecting locally and internationally; support our goal for sustainable textiles, and invest in a clothing market with a conscience.”
Attendees can shop for original items at the Textile Marketplace, see unique handmade garments at the juried fashion show, and experience the life of a Lowell Mill Girl through a historical portrayal. Numerous participation workshops are scheduled throughout the day which allow attendees to learn about various techniques and prepare their own items to take home. Participants can upcycle their old t-shirts into fashion accessories, weave a bowl out of recycled plastic bags, create felted soap using fine merino wool, crochet a colorful hyperbolic plane, and learn to weave on a Pin Loom.
The Women & Textiles Expo is a family-friendly event and free to the public. More information can be found on the organization’s facebook page https://www.facebook.com/LoadingDockArts including a schedule of events and list of presenters, partners, friends and donors.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency and an additional grant from the Lowell Cultural Council a local agency.
