The weather might be cold, but sports enthusiasts are fired up year-round! This is especially true in the Greater Merrimack Valley, where you can enjoy sporting events and get in your own practice throughout the seasons. From skiing to football to hockey, there’s no shortage of athletic fun to be had, so check out the fun things to do in Merrimack Valley.

Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell

The Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell is one of Massachusetts’ finest venues for all kinds of entertainment. However, sports are where it really shines, hosting a number of great local teams. It’s home to the UMass Lowell River Hawks hockey and basketball teams. It’s also where the Professional Women’s Hockey League’s Boston franchise plays home games. The Massachusetts Pirates also now call the venue home, and their season is right around the corner, with tickets available for games from March through July. If you’re a fan of sports entertainment, the Tsongas Center also hosts live professional wrestling matches.

The venue can seat 6,500 patrons for hockey games and 7,800 for other events, so you’ll have plenty of fellow fans to cheer along with during the games.

Nashoba Valley Ski Area

When it’s wintertime, sports enthusiasts still want to get out and be active, so many turn to skiing. Nashoba Valley Ski Area is perfect for it, even during more temperate winters, as they make their own snow when necessary!

Even new skiers will feel welcome, as ski lessons are offered in one-day and multi-week increments, and daily equipment rentals are available. More advanced skiers have an assortment of trails to choose from, or can even get competitive with the 6-week adult racing team. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to have fun in the snow.

The Edge Sports Center

The Edge Sports Center in Bedford has become a hub as a Northwest Boston recreational facility, hosting over 260,000 youth athletes and over 85,000 adult athletes every year. This state-of-the-art facility was developed to provide varied recreational activities for athletes of all ages and abilities as a response to the growing demand for year-found athletic facilities. There are two ice rinks and two outdoor turf fields, though one field is enclosed from mid-November through March so teams can train even during the off-season.

Soccer teams, lacrosse clubs, figure skaters, and hockey teams all make use of these exceptional facilities, as well as Wizards Strength and Conditioning, who provide physical therapy, reconditioning, and personal training for athletes of all levels.

Sports enthusiasts will have an amazing time in Merrimack Valley. You can get active even during the winter months, or you can cheer on professional and college teams as they play for the championship.
