NANCY TOBEY ART EXHIBITION AT MANDARIN ASIAN BISTRO
Opening Reception: Sunday, Nov. 8, 4-6PM
Exhibit Runs: Nov. 2 – Jan. 2, 2016
Lowell, MA: Arts organizer and Middlesex Community College adjunct professor, Mary Hart, is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by encaustic painter, Nancy Tobey, on view from Nov. 2 through Jan 2, 2016, at downtown Lowell’s Mandarin Asian Bistro.
An opening reception with the artist is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 6 PM at the restaurant.
Originally hailing from an art glass discipline, Nancy Tobey has recently turned to mixed-media painting and works with found objects, beeswax, encaustic, oil, ink, and graphite. “I am energized by colors and marks made on the surface of the wax,” says Tobey. “I let my mind drift through those colors and marks, and then I let that energy move through to my work.”
“Nancy’s experience as a fused glass artist has led to her current work in encaustic, a medium which uses heat with beautiful pigments, wax and varnish to create paintings with rich textures and intense colors,” says curator Mary Hart. “She has remarkable control of a volatile medium, melted beeswax, and the resulting rich surfaces have color and depth to delight the eye of the viewer.”
While the artist has shown in numerous art glass themed exhibits throughout the country and in the UK, her encaustic work has recently been seen at a Mass Wax group show and juried into a “Wax and Paper” exhibition at the Chandler Gallery, both in Cambridge, MA.
Tobey has taught glass bead making throughout New England, New York and in Mulrany, Ireland and has works in permanent collections at the Sandwich Glass Museum (MA) and the Kobe Lampwork Glass Museum in Japan. She works out of her studio at Western Avenue.
The Nancy Tobey exhibit is part of a continuing art series hosted by Mandarin Asian Bistro and curated by Mary Hart.
Mandarin Asian Bistro, a Chinese food and Sushi restaurant, is located at 24 Market Street in downtown Lowell.
About Mary Hart: Mary Hart is a Lowell resident, an Arts League of Lowell artist, an artist member of the Brush Art Gallery and an adjunct professor in the art department at Middlesex Community College.
