Whether it’s the holiday season, February vacation, or the quiet months of late winter, it’s important to make plans to get out of your house and experience something fun. So why not a play?

The Greater Merrimack Valley is home to several theaters and stages where you can watch live performances and be drawn into another world by incredible actors, moving stories, and stunning sets.

Don’t let the cold weather turn you into a homebody. Come to the Greater Merrimack Valley and book a ticket to a play that will transport you to a different time and place.

Lowell Memorial Auditorium

Lowell Memorial Auditorium is one of the most versatile Performing Arts Centers in New England. Here you’ll find concerts, boxing and wrestling matches, comedians, and plays. The plays are put on by the Merrimack Repertory Theatre, which is one of the nation’s top regional theaters and offers a multi-show season. Each production is performed in the 279-seat Nancy L. Donahue Theatre in the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. There’s a wide variety of one-night performances, so be sure to check the schedule frequently and book your tickets fast so you don’t miss out.

Chelmsford Center for the Arts

There’s something special about community theater, and the Chelmsford Center for the Arts in Chelmsford is where you can experience it for yourself. From annual holiday musicals to monologues and skits performed by Chelmsford High School students past and present, you’ll be able to experience and support the town’s local talent as they take to the stage.

To further expand their theater offerings, the Chelmsford Center for the Arts has recently partnered with the Roaring Hills Theatre Co. of Littleton, MA. Thanks to them, the Center’s stage will have an abundance of new shows ranging from Shakespeare to more contemporary plays. Keep a close eye on the winter schedule to see what new shows will be performed when you’re visiting the Greater Merrimack Valley.

Isaac Harris Cary Memorial Building

Over in Lexington, the Isaac Harris Cary Memorial Building, also known as Cary Hall, is home to live performances throughout the year. Many of them are concerts, but plays and ballet performances are often scheduled throughout the year, especially during the holiday season. This grand auditorium has fantastic acoustics, which is part of why groups like the Lexington Symphony have called it home for over 80 years.

The next time you’re planning a trip to the Greater Merrimack Valley, fit some time in your schedule to go see a play. The performances will move and inspire you, and take you away from the cold New England winter for a few wonderful hours. Be ready to give a standing ovation for the great performers, and you’ll surely want to give these theaters another visit in the future.
