The long days of summer are approaching, and the start of the school year feels further and further away. You’ve done everything you could think of with the little ones who are fidgety in the heat. Maybe you have a pre-teen who seems to be even more restless in the back of the car than usual during long day trips. But what if there is a solution practically in your backyard? Merrimack Valley has the answer.
Here are a few upcoming events we think you and the kids will both enjoy this summer.
Discovery Museum
Build the Little City of Fairyborough
For the little ones (and maybe the more whimsical teens), check out the little city of Fairyborough with a big future. Located in the Discovery Museum in Acton, children are encouraged to design, build, and explore a mysterious forest full of fairy houses, gnome homes, and sprite skyscrapers. Constructed with natural materials and child’s creativity, this event is from July 8 to the 14. Drop-in any time from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and watch the creative magic happen.
FernGully Movie Watch
A children’s movie classic, FernGully will enchant your children and also teach them about conservation efforts. Before the movie starts at 7:30 p.m., kids will have activities to learn about the environment. Bring your lawn chairs, and maybe a few blankets to lay under the stars with while enjoying frozen treats available from VeeBop’s Ice Cream truck.
Nara Park Beach Party
Let’s have fun in the sun at Nara Park Beach in Acton this summer! On July 24th from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a free concert and beach admission for the event. Pack a cooler with summer favorites or try some of the food available for purchase. You can’t go wrong with the live band and the Scooby Snax, livening up the beach this summer. To confirm your free spot, register today on their Eventbrite page.

No matter which day you choose, you’ll be able to attend a variety of different events to engage and enchant your little ones.

And on Wednesday, July 20, experience Boston’s best and only female full-time professional juggler! Since 1997, she’s been creating spectacular events full of magic, music, singing, physical comedy, and interactive audience participation to maximize the silliness.
With tons of free events, make sure to visit the Lowell Summer Series web page for all the details.
While there are plenty of events and places to go throughout the Merrimack Valley (like our museums or walking trails), we hope this list has sparked some new ideas to entertain the kiddos this summer.
