Three Ways to Beat the Winter Blues in the Merrimack Valley

Share this post:

The winter months can be tough, especially in the Merrimack Valley where the weather can sometimes be cold and gloomy. Here are 3 ways to beat the winter blues:

Get Outside And Do Some Light Exercise

Even if it’s cold, try to get outside for a few minutes each day. The natural light and fresh air can help to improve your mood. In addition to the benefits of being outdoors, doing some light exercise is a great way to boost your mood and energy levels.  If you feel up to it, head on a hike or do a little cross-country skiing if there is a lot of snow you’d rather glide across than trudge through. If you ski, you can head to Nashoba Valley Ski Resort.

The  Nashoba Valley has 17 trails on a 240 vertical foot mountain. Woah! So much snow and so many trails to choose from, talk about a fun filled day! The Nashoba Valley Ski Area also creates their own snow so you can rest assured you’ll have a nice blanket of snow to ski on when you arrive.

Encourage Connections

Isolation can contribute to the winter blues, so try to connect with friends and family, even if it’s just over the phone or through video chat. If the weather isn’t too outlandish and your friends and family are close by, why not head to a new restaurant or cafe. Trying something new and settling into a comfy spot with a familiar face can really help combat any feelings of isolation that are starting to creep in after the holidays.

Consider heading to Mill No. 5 in Lowell. An interior streetscape of historic architecture, Mill No. 5 is a center for dining, shopping and entertainment, as well as a working space for artists and start-ups. Explore the bazaar or the local farmers market. Browse through the shops after enjoying a cup of coffee at one of the many dining options that calls Mill No. 5 home. Thinking of catching the newest flick? Mill No. 5 also has a great movie theater to visit! So no matter what your friends and family may want to do, Mill No. 5 can provide it.

Find A Hobby

Engaging in a new hobby or activity can help to combat boredom and lift your spirits. Consider taking a class or trying something new right here in the Merrimack Valley. Thinking of honing your skills with a paint brush or another art form? Consider taking a class at Julie’s Art School in North Andover. With classes for children as young as 5 all the way through to adults looking to learn, there are so many options for not only you, but your whole family.

Remember, it’s normal to feel a little down during the winter months, but there are things you can do to improve your mood like some of the activities listed above. Try incorporating some of these activities into your routine and see if it helps to beat the winter blues.
