Vast! Mad! Striving!

Kerouac’s Lowell Today

An exhibit at Lowell Telecommunications Corp.

October 4 through November 23, 2017

Lowell MA: Mary Hart is pleased to announce an art exhibit at Lowell Telecommunications Corp. The exhibit runs from October 4 through November 23, 2017 with an opening reception on Friday, October 6 from 5:30 to 8 PM at LTC.

Throughout his lifetime, Jack Kerouac’s years in Lowell colored his writing. Born to an immigrant family of French Canadians, he grew up in the teeming churn of this riverside factory town – absorbing and reflecting the cultural mix: his family’s devout Catholicism, hardscrabble mill workers, big city crooks and characters, and school chums’ capers, careening off the bricked streets and riverways, which he evoked in memorable stream of consciousness phrases in many of his novels.

Just as Kerouac carried the Lowell of his youth with him, Lowell retains the ghost of Kerouac alive in the city today. This is not intended as a nostalgia exhibit, but one that captures Lowell today, as it still embodies the grit and variety of a time when Kerouac roamed the streets.

Curated by Mary Hart of Middlesex Community College, the show gathers work by 13 artists who apply a keen eye to today’s Lowell. Included are Stephan Anstey, Mark Brack, Ed Bray, Rich Breault, M.J. Bujold, Jeff Caplan, Caroline Gallagher, Charles Gallagher, Gilbert Gandia, Jordyn Haim, Tom Hart, David Phaneuf, Sergio Velasquez. Works include paintings, drawings and watercolors, assemblage, photography and soundscapes.

The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday, October 6 from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at Lowell Telecommunications Corporation, 246 Market St. Lowell. A part of the annual Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Festival, the exhibit opening will feature music, refreshments and poetry readings.
