Time travel to 1891 on Sept. 6-7 with a free multimedia presentation that uses original music, text, historical context, images, and short presentations to tell the story of four adventurous Lowell women who spent two weeks on a remote Boston Harbor island and kept a journal of their experiences. The immersive event will introduce the “Merrie Trippers,” and explore the social and literary world they inhabited. A live performance of newly commissioned music by Massachusetts composer Adam Jacob Simon highlights the work of Lowell poet Lucy Larcom; video projections bring the island sojourn into greater focus; and the women’s own art and photographs shine out of this fascinating document. Meet Stephanie Schorow, lead author of A Boston Harbor Islands Adventure: The Great Brewster Journal of 1891, literature scholar Anna Brecke, and producer/singer Emily Marvosh in this free event in the newly renovated Donahue Family Academic Arts Center, housed in a historic downtown train depot.
